Summer Vacations: 5 Travel Tips for Moms

If you're like me, you're probably aching for a fun escape this summer. Hanging around the house can get tiresome, especially if the kids are bored, whiny and have nothing to do but play videogames. It may be late in the season, but there is still plenty of time to schedule an amazing trip that will allow your family to spend quality time together. However, if you want to avoid any hassles, it's important to be prepared before you go.

1. Prepare for the Unexpected

We all like to hope our flight will never be delayed, but it's certainly possible. Prepare for this unpleasant roadblock by strategically packing your carry-on bags to include things like money, wetnaps, snacks, favorite toys, diapers and any essential medications that you may need. If you miss a flight due to a delay, the airline will put you up in a hotel until another flight is available. Make sure you are ready for any potential delays like this by having these items on hand and not all packed away in checked luggage.

2. Pick a Place That Offers Fun for Young and Old

To ensure that you have the best time possible, pick a place that has something to offer both the adults and the children in your group. Many resorts have excellent kids camps, offering fun activities such as swimming, crafts or even horseback riding. Also check for things like if the hotel room has a refrigerator so you can store food and safe some money by not eating at a restaurant for every meal. I used Gogobot to search through a great list of Orlando hotels, and was able to find one that offered my entire family a free continental breakfast. This will give you a little time off to relax in the sun by the pool or enjoy a romantic dinner with your spouse.

3. Document The Fun

Family trips are all about creating memories, so be sure to pack your camera, memory card and plenty of batteries. If your kids are old enough, give them a camera of their own and encourage them to practice photography, or simply purchase a few disposable cameras for the little ones to play with. Not only will you have fun taking pictures during all of your activities, but you can also make scrapbooks together after you return home.

4. Bring The Right Food

While traveling, always stick to the same brand of baby food that you normally use. If you purchase a new brand when you get to your location, it could potentially upset your child's stomach or cause an allergic reaction. If you do want to test out a new travel food, such as squeezable baby food packs, test them out at least a week before your trip.

5. Follow a Familiar Routine

Kids thrive on routines, and vacations can be a major disruption to their eating and sleep schedules. Don't neglect naptime just because you're out of town, or you may have to deal with the consequences. Before you leave, decide on a schedule for napping, snacking and meals, and stick to it.

I hope these traveling tips are pertinent to your travels this summer! Remember to have fun, and be safe!

  2. Here is one more tip I would like to share that goes in a little different direction. We all know that there is extra commotion and distraction when traveling with kids which can lead to leaving things behind. I found this out while traveling to Canada with my son and my laptop got left behind at a cafe. Luckily for me I had a tracer tag on it. A waiter where I ate lunch found it and entered my tracker number on the website and I was sent a text message (and an email) before I ever even knew it was missing. I was able to recover it before leaving Toronto. I'm not sure what would have happened had I not discovered it until the next day when I was 400 miles away. The tags are available through Mystufflostandfound.com. They saved my trip and I now have them on almost everything that goes with me on a trip.
